Putrajaya monorail project postponed

PUTRAJAYA June 8 - The 9 km long monorail project in Putrajaya,the federal administrative capital,has been postponed, Minister of the Federal Territories Tan Sri Mohamed Isa Abdul Samad said Tuesday.

The monorail transportation system development was included in Putrajaya's masterplan and was also part of the federal administrative capital's integrated transportation system.

However some office development projects in Putrajaya and those that had been completed had not been occupied and the monorail was to have served these areas.

Once these buildings were completed and occupied the monorail project could then resume, he said.

"Around the `Core Island' area for instance, we have targetted a 30 percent occupancy rate and we also want the two new ministry buildings to be fully completed and occupied before the monorail can move in," he told reporters when asked on on the status of the RM400 million monorail project, which was initially scheduled to be completed by year-end.

He declined to comment when asked if the financial factor was among the reasons for the postponement.

Earlier, Mohamed Isa accompanied by Putrajaya Corporation President, Tan Sri Azizan Zainul Abidin toured the `Core Island' which encompassed the Boulevard, Putra Square and the two new ministry buildings which were nearing completion.
