Post-war peace at the Games

Olympic 1920 in Antwerp

The first world war did not prevent Belgium nor Antwerp staging the 1920 Games. Germany and Austria were not invited.

The Games brought together 2,668 athletes from 29 countries. Twenty-one sports featured in the programme from April 20 to September 12.

In a symbol of refound peace, doves flew in the sky above Antwerp whilst the Olympic flag, with its five rings, and the Olympic message, recited by Belgian fencer Victor Boin, make their appearance.

The United States collected 41 gold medals but the Americans lacked pace in athletics. Once again Finland surprised with nine champions.

Beaten by France's Joseph Guillemot in the 5,000m, their top man Paavo Nurmi nevertheless won three golds.

As in 1912, Duke Kahanamokou was the fastest in the swimming whilst Italian fencer Nedo Nadi won five titles. Suzanne Lenglen of France was crowned
